Hiking to World’s End Sri Lanka

It is amazing how one seemingly tiny teardrop shaped country can be so diverse when it comes to landscapes and climate. The Hill Country of Sri Lanka has much to offer to the outdoorsy traveler. Nuwara Eliya or “Little England” as it is fondly called is a good place to spend a few days or just the night before an early morning trek to World’s End at Hortons Plains Nature Reserve, something you should definitely do just for the love of hiking.

The Grosvenor Hotel is a great budget hotel and is located within walking distance of the market which is really just a few shops, cafes and restaurants to cater to tourists and holidaying Sri Lankans.

Most hotels and guest houses will gladly pack you a picnic basket of breakfast to enjoy at World’s End. From Nuwara Eliya the drive to Hortons Plains takes about 1.5 hours, so be sure to leave very early (6.00 am) so that you can be there around sunrise to start the trek before it gets too warm. The early hour in the Hill Country is always chilly so don’t be fooled by the weather during the rest of the day. The trek also trails through dense cloud forests and it can get pretty cool in there.

Hiking to World’s End, Sri Lanka

The entire trek trailing through Mini World’s End, World’s End and Baker’s Falls is about 9.5 km and takes 3-4 hours. It takes you through cloud forests, dry grasslands and wet slippery terrain close to Baker’s Falls. It is a great place to enjoy the flora and if you get lucky you may even spot a sambar deer.

The trail is well marked and most travellers navigate it on their own. The view from World’s End is a massive cloud of mist over a valley that really does seem like it could be the World’s End! Great spot to enjoy a hearty breakfast of fresh fruit and egg sandwiches!
